This key area is responsible for the initiatives that Shoppers Drug Mart®/Pharmaprix® will accomplish during the upcoming year. Not only does Strategy implement business and strategy development plans, it is also accountable for new business development and acquisitions and new store development.

Human Resources

Peers Relations

The Peers Relations department provides an effective two-way communication between the Company and Associate/Owners by facilitating regular dialogue and meetings with the regional committees of Associate Peers. Regional Peer Committee Representatives are elected to positions of leadership and responsibility by their fellow Associates and are represented at the national level by the Regional Chairpersons.

Retail Development

Exciting challenges and new growth are a constant in Retail Development. From real estate and retail planning to design and construction, this dynamic department covers them all. With our new prototype large-format store, we have a new store model that is unique and can be adapted to accommodate freestanding, streetscape or mall locations. Inside the four walls, we have a flexible approach to store design that allows us to tailor departments and categories to match specific location types and local market dynamics.

Merchandising and Marketing

Merchandising and Marketing is a department of decision makers who decide on how all goods, services and the company as a whole are advertised to the public. Along with advertising and merchandising, the department manages all customer relations and retail concepts. Merchandising and Marketing is also responsible for executing all translation for the company, and overseeing the post office and lottery sales.

Procurement and Supply Chain

Responsible for category management and corporate branding, this department decides which goods and services will be made available for sale in our stores. Procurement and Supply Chain is responsible for the creation of brand products, determines the best method for individual goods to be delivered, and handles all inventory management, logistics and photo development planning.

Operations Development

The Operations Group is responsible for providing support to the stores, and providing solutions to enhance both their short-term and long-term performance. The team includes Vice Presidents of Operations, District Managers, Pharmacy Operations Coordinators, Cosmetic Coordinators, Loss Prevention Coordinators, and Store Technology Coordinators, who are the key point of support with the stores. The Operations Group also includes the Operations Development department, which researches and develops such solutions, and coordinates all Corporate programs for store implementation, including the handling of communications.

Pharmacy - Corporate

The corporate Pharmacy department manages all aspects of the HealthWATCH® System, Pharmaceuticals, Pharmacy Affairs, Pharmacy Marketing, Pharmacy Services, Pricing Analysis, as well as Professional Affairs.


The Finance department is in charge of Capital Planning, manages all Finances and provides Internal Audit Services, as well as Treasury and Investment Relations.

Information Technology

Responsible for Business Services, Production Services and User Services, the Information Technology department maintains all technology, including phones and computers, throughout the Shoppers Drug Mart®/Pharmaprix® organization.

Corporate Affairs

The key responsibilities of this department are Consumer and Corporate Affairs, Events, and Public Relations. For example, introduced in 2002, our annual Tree of Life campaign provides customers with the opportunity to contribute to their communities by making a small donation of one dollar to buy a paper leaf to paste on the Tree of Life in their store. The funds raised from customers and employees at each store are then distributed to various local and regional health care causes and education initiatives, as determined by the Associate/Owners and their teams. In this matter, Associate/Owners are able to respond to local priorities and support causes that are important to their communities. Through the Tree of Life campaign, the customers and employees of Shoppers Drug Mart®/Pharmaprix® were able to give $1.3 million to their communities in 2003.

Home Health Care

Responsible for every facet of performance at our Home Health Care stores, this department manages Business Development, Finance, Marketing and Operations.
